Roman Rib Stitch Toe-up Socks


Size: Woman's Medium


Finished measurements:

Circumference 8.5"

Foot Length 9.25"


Materials:

2 skeins - Louet Gems Merino, sport weight, 3.5oz/225 yards per skein

3mm double-pointed needles & crochet hook or size to obtain gauge, waste yarn, markers


Gauge:

6.5 stitches per 1"/2.5cm


Terms:

dpn(s) - double-pointed needle(s)

k - knit

kf&b - knit into front, then back of stitch

k2tog - knit 2 stitches together

p - purl

p2tog - purl 2 stitches together

pm - place marker

rnd(s) - round(s)

RS - right side

sl - slip

ssk - slip 2 stitches separately to right needle as if to knit. Knit these 2 stitches together by inserting left needle into them from left to right.

st(s) - stitch(es)

wyib - with yarn in back

wyif - with yarn in front

WS - wrong side


Instructions:


Toe:

With waste yarn and a crochet hook, make a slip stitch chain long enough to cast on 12 sts by knitting into the bumps on the underside of the chain. With main yarn cast on 12 sts.

Row 1: K.

Row 2: P.

Rows 3-8: Repeat Rows 1-2 3 times.

Insert a 2nd dpn into bottom 12 sts and remove waste yarn at the same time.

On RS, k6, pm to denote beginning of rnd. With dpns and distributing sts evenly, K6, pick up and k2 along side edge, pm, pick up and k2 along side edge, k across bottom edge, pick up and k2 along side edge, pm, pick up and k2 along side edge, k to end of rnd. 32 sts

Rnd 1: K.

Rnd 2: K to last 2 sts before marker, kf&b, k1, sl marker, kf&b, k across to last 2 sts before marker, kf&b, k1, sl marker, kf&b, k to end of rnd.

Repeat Rnds 1-2 until sts total 56.


Foot:

Begin pattern (Roman Rib Stitch)

Rnds 1-2: K.

Rnds 3-4: K to marker, sl marker, *k1,p1, repeat from * to next marker, sl marker, k to end of rnd.

Rnds 5-6: K.

Rnds 7-8: K to marker, sl marker, *p1,k1, repeat from * to next marker, sl marker, k to end of rnd.

Repeat Rnds 1-8 until sock measures approximately 5.5" from beginning and ending on an even-numbered rnd.


Gusset:

Rnd 1: K to last 2 sts before marker, kf&b, k1, sl marker, work across instep in established pattern, sl marker, kf&b, k to end of rnd.

Rnd 2: K to marker, sl marker, work in established pattern, sl marker, k to end of rnd.

Rnds 3-18: Repeat Rnds 1-2 8 times.

Rnd 19: Repeat Rnd 1.


Turn Heel:

K9, then place 18 sts centred over beginning of rnd marker onto one dpn, distribute remaining sts evenly onto 2 dpns.

Row 1 (WS): Sl1 wyif, p16, turn.

Row 2 (RS): Sl1 wyib, k15, turn.

Row 3 (WS): Sl1 wyif, p14, turn.

Row 4 (RS): Sl1 wyib, k13, turn.

Row 5 (WS): Sl1 wyif, p12, turn.

Row 6 (RS): Sl1 wyib, k11, turn.

Row 7 (WS): Sl1 wyif, p10, turn.

Row 8 (RS): Sl1 wyib, k9, turn.

Row 9 (WS): Sl1 wyif, p8, turn.

Row 10 (RS): Sl1 wyib, k7, turn.

Row 11 (WS): Sl1 wyif, p7, *p into st below first st on left-hand needle, p first st, repeat from * 4 more times, turn.

Row 12 (RS): Sl1 wyib, k17, *k into st below first st on left-hand needle, k first st, repeat from * 4 more times, turn. 28 sts


Heel Flap:

Row 1: Sl1 wyif, p to last st before end of row, p2tog (last st on left-hand needle and first st from gusset).

Row 2: Sl1 wyib, *k, sl1, repeat from * to last st before end of row, k2tog (last st on left-hand needle and first st from gusset).

Row 3: Repeat Row 1.

Row 4: Sl2 wyib, *k, sl1, repeat from * to last 2 sts before end of row, k1, k2tog (last st on left-hand needle and first st from gusset).

Repeat Rows 1-4 until all gusset sts have been knitted to the heel. 56 sts total left on needles.


Leg:

Beginning of rnd now starts at left side of heel, pm. Work leg of sock in established Roman Rib Stitch pattern to end of rnd. Continue until sock measures approximately 6" from top of heel.


Ribbing:

P1, *k2,p2, repeat from * to last 3 sts, k2, p1.

Work 2x2 ribbing for 2". Bind off loosely in ribbing, weave in all ends.
